If you love Olive Garden’s Chicken Gnocchi Soup, you’re going to fall head over heels for this copycat version. It’s creamy, cozy, loaded with chicken and pillowy gnocchi, and honestly? I think it’s better than the restaurant version.

This is one of those soups that feels like comfort in a bowl, and once you make it at home, you’ll understand why it’s on repeat around here.
When we lived down at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, we were so excited when Olive Garden finally opened nearby. I instantly fell in love with their Chicken Marsala, endless salad, and of course… the Chicken Gnocchi Soup.
But over the years, that soup started to disappoint me. It felt thinner, less hearty, and more than once I was served what tasted like hot milk with spinach and maybe one lonely piece of gnocchi with no chicken in sight.
So I decided to make my own version at home.
This copycat Chicken Gnocchi Soup is rich, flavorful, and packed with everything the restaurant version sometimes forgets… plenty of chicken, soft gnocchi, and a creamy broth.

How to make Better Than Olive Garden Chicken Gnocchi Soup:
-
In a large pot, over medium heat, melt butter and heat olive oil.
-
Once the butter is melted, add the celery and cook for about 5-10 minutes, until soft. If you want the celery to be a bit crunchy, 5 minutes is enough time. I like the celery in this soup to be very soft.
-
Add in the minced garlic and stir. Let the garlic cook for 2 minutes; your kitchen is going to be smelling wonderful at this point.
-
Add in carrots and seasonings. Add in flour. Stir until everything is combined. Stir and cook flour mixture for 2 minutes.
-
This is going to thicken the soup but you don’t want the taste of raw flour in your soup. So make sure to take the time to stir and cook the flour a bit before moving on to the next part of the recipe.
-
Add in chicken broth and stir well to break up any clumps.
-
Add in milk and heavy cream, stir. Toss in frozen spinach and cooked, shredded chicken, stir.
-
Turn up heat and bring soup to a boil. Gently add gnocchi to soup and boil for 4-5 minutes.
Serve Hot/Warm.

What kind of chicken broth should I use?
You’ve got options here:
- Homemade chicken broth
- Store-bought low-sodium or regular chicken broth
- Chicken bouillon mixed with water
- Broth made with Better Than Bouillon®
Lately, I’ve been loving Better Than Bouillon® Roasted Chicken Base. This isn’t sponsored — it just gives the soup a deeper, richer flavor than most boxed broths.
Angie’s Suggestions:
- This is great served with breadsticks or crusty bread.
Quick FAQ
Can I use homemade gnocchi?
Absolutely!
Can I use fresh spinach instead of frozen?
Yes, just add a couple handfuls of fresh spinach.
Does this soup store well?
It does! The soup thickens as it cools, but loosens right back up when reheated.
Chicken Tip:
Any cooked chicken works here. I love using dark meat because it stays extra tender, but chicken breasts are just fine, too.
Store-bought rotisserie chicken are perfect for meals like this! When I make this soup, I use the thighs and legs of rotisserie chicken and save the chicken breasts for recipes like this Chicken Pot Pie Casserole.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave. When reheating it, you may want to add a splash of milk or water to loosen up the sauce.

Hi! Making this tonight and it looks great so far, the only problem I have is that this makes a LOT so I need to know if I can freeze it 😅 It’s only my boyfriend and I so we don’t want this to get wasted. A reply is appreciated, thanks!!
Hi Chesney! I’m so sorry, I just saw this! Yes! You can freeze this in an air tight container 🙂
Thanks so much for this recipe! It was a hit with my family, and was really really close to Olive Garden’s. I used fresh spinach instead of frozen because that’s what I had on hand. Thanks again!
I made a big pot of it last night so easy and good
Loved it! I don’t think I would change a thing!
This recipe was spot on! I just added a bit of garlic salt to taste and it was so delicious!
Delicious and Excellent
I have made this soup 3 times and it is so good! The only change I made was use fresh spinach. I love that you can freeze it.
Next time I’ll use the whole bag of fresh baby spinach. I always use better than boullion products for any soups or when a recipe needs broth. It’s the best out there, especially any of the low sodium versions 😋
I love better than bouillon! I think it’s great for all kinds of recipes.
First time I made it except the gnocchi came out gummy. They aren’t suppose to right? What did I do wrong?
Hi Gina! Store bought gnocchi when boiled instead of baked (and added into a soup) is more gummy than if they were baked and served with pasta sauce.
Absolutely wonderful! I used the entire rotisserie chicken and instead of powdered onion, I used 1/2 a large yellow onion. Cooked the onion/celery/ carrots together. Our local farmers market has a lady that makes homemade spinach gnocchi- perfection,
This is an incredible recipe, I’ve made it 4 times and it’s so good! I do use fresh spinach instead of frozen and sometimes I make it with Ditalini pasta instead of the gnocchi. We love it both ways and people always ask for the recipe!!!
The Chicken Gnocchi Soup is one of the best soups I have ever made or eaten anywhere, including O. G. Love it!
I made this for dinner and everyone loved it even the picky grandkids. It was simple and came together quickly the only change I made was I topped each bowl with some Parmesan cheese.
My 3rd time making this. It is delicious & I always get so many compliments on how good it is. This time I used cauliflower gnocci and it was just as good. I use fresh spinach, And I get the garlic & herb chicken breasts from Aldi.
I made this a couple of nights ago with a couple of deviations from the original recipe (due to ingredients on hand) and it was very yummy! I didn’t have heavy cream so I used 1/2 and 1/2 and it worked well. I also didn’t have any chicken on hand so I just omitted it.
My husband and I love this delicious soup. I add extra carrots, spinach, and celery. I’m so glad I found this site with this specific recipe, it’s perfect!
Just love this recipe!!!!
This soup was very tasty!! Loved this recipe will make again!
I NEVER leave reviews but this one deserves a review!!!! I followed this recipe exactly with the exception that rather than just celery, I used the Cajun trinity, onions, bell pepper, celery and I omitted the onion powder. This soup is AMAZING!!! Like I was excited to come home and eat leftovers 🤣🙌🏻 Thank you soooo much!!!!
Hi Ashlee!!! I’m so glad that you liked it!
I would love to make this but would like to know if you have nutritional breakdown for Potassium, sodium etc.
Thanks
Hi Barbara, I don’t add the nutritional breakdown because I’m not a registered nutritionist but there are some websites out there that will break if down for you. Everything will also depend on the brands you use.
Love this recipe! It has become a favorite at our house. Only change I have made is to use mini gnocchi & I put more in than the recipe calls for, because we love gnocchi!
Can’t wait to make this soup! I have mushroom gnocchi on hand-will that work?
I’m sure it would be fine 🙂
This really is better than Olive Garden. Thank you for sharing! 10/10 no modifications or substitutions. My go to soup on cold and rainy days .
